Black Tie Swan Regatta 2005, Cowes Isle of Wight
Mon 20th Measurement day. Much attention from the safety officer. Several trips to the Chandler's to buy things we probably don't need and have back at home :-(. Eventually passed as fit to sail. Starting crew was: Gavin, James,
Nigel, Martin, Greg, Bill, Kevin, Mike, Nick, Dean.
Tue 21st Saved from an over the line by a general recall then, light airs, poor start, race finished early before we had time to recover. Afternoon race actually ran to completion, several mishaps after weak start, but improvement on am.
Wed 22nd Start delayed and delayed and delayed until 1300. Very light airs. Sailed much better, finished mid fleet but suffered on handicap. Nigel & Bill left crew, joined by 'grinder' Greg and Paul.
Thu 23rd Excellent day, no late starts, no missed marks, no spinnaker foul ups, and no sailing because of lack of wind.
Fri 24th Trouble with our movable keel unable to lower and unsure of its position after attempted repairst. Very thundery day with much rain, lightning and sqawls. Great am start and then lost race position due to a slow spinnaker recovery in strong breeze. Retired after sopping to assist in a man overboard situation. Great pm start, sailing very well, much improved crew team work, unfortunately missed a nasty gate with strong ebb tide and lost position. Finished on a spinnaker reach of exciting proportions only to subsequently discover that our keel wasn't lowered after all. Martin slipped in the afternoon race grappling with the genoa and unfortunately broke two ribs :-(
Sat 25th Diver unable to fix the movable keel. Two good starts, good crew work, spinnaker hoists and recoveries, sailing well but misjudged critical marks in strong tides to our expense.
Summary A very eventful and fun week of sailing during which performance and teamwork steadily improved but which resulted in us being denied the results we wanted. Next time will be very much better......
